Packing tape looks like a commodity until a carton opens in transit. The difference between a roll that holds and a roll that lifts comes down to three numbers printed nowhere on the pack: film micron, adhesive coating and roll length. This guide explains what each one means for BOPP tape, which width to use for which carton, and how many cartons a roll really seals.
Quick answer: for ecommerce cartons up to 5 kg, use 2 inch (48 mm) transparent or brown BOPP tape of 40 micron or above in an H-pattern. Move to 3 inch (72 mm) for cartons over 5 kg or wider than 18 inches. Printed Amazon or Flipkart tape is the same film with branding, usually in longer 130 m rolls.
What BOPP tape is
BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene. The film is stretched in two directions during manufacture, which is why it resists splitting lengthwise, unwinds without snapping and stays clear. A water-based acrylic or hot-melt adhesive is coated on one side. The film gives the strength; the adhesive gives the grip.

Micron counts film plus adhesive. Two rolls with the same micron can behave differently if one skimps on adhesive, so judge a new supplier by a test carton, not by the number alone.

Transparent, brown or printed?
- Transparent keeps printed artwork and shipping labels visible through the tape. Default for branded cartons.
- Brown (khaki) blends into corrugated board and hides scuffs on reused boxes. Default for plain-box dispatch.
- Amazon or Flipkart printed signals a marketplace shipment to every handler in the chain and adds a tamper cue because the print will not line up again once cut.

How to seal a carton so it stays sealed
- Fold the flaps flat and press the centre seam closed.
- Run one strip along the centre seam, extending 2 to 3 inches down each end panel.
- Run a strip along each edge seam to form an H.
- Press the tape down with your palm or the dispenser roller. Adhesive bonds with pressure, not time.
- For cartons over 10 kg or reused boxes, add a second centre strip.
Frequently asked questions
What micron is best for packing tape?
40 to 42 micron is the sweet spot for ecommerce cartons. It holds up to about 5 kg, feeds cleanly through a dispenser and costs only a little more than economy tape.
Why does my tape lift at the corners?
Usually dust on the carton, cold weather, or too little pressure when applying. Wipe the seam, press firmly, and if it keeps happening switch to a heavier micron or a hot-melt adhesive.
Is brown tape stronger than transparent?
No. Colour is only pigment in the film. Strength depends on micron and adhesive, not colour.
How much tape do I need per month?
Multiply daily cartons by 1.5 m for an H-pattern with 2 inch tape. 100 cartons a day is about 150 m, so roughly 2.5 rolls of 65 m or 1.2 rolls of 130 m per day.
